Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Do I need to buy a Credant Server?
Yes, all installations require a Credant server to function properly. Credant servers are available in different size licenses for the number of people in the organization. If you have multiple AD domains or separate (non synchronized) user directories, you may need multiple servers.

  2. Do I need to buy separate hardware, or is it included with the price of the Server?
Credant Servers are Software only. Dedicated hardware needs to be set up separately.

  3. Do I need to buy maintenance?
Yes, maintenance is required for all Credant products every year including year 1.

  4. How do I get started quickly for a small group of users?
The Credant QuickStart package is an easy entry including a server, 100 shields and 100 gatekeepers. The server is software-only and requires additional dedicated hardware to run.

  5. When do I need Users vs. Devices?
The product functions the same, but some customers keep better records of the number of devices and some keep better track of the number of users, so Credant is flexible enough to price either way. If the users have multiple devices (smart phones, laptops, desktops, etc), then per user pricing will probably be more cost-effective.

  6. How are the files and media decrypted? Is there a password, CAC, or some sort of biometrics?
Credant has three options for removable media all configurable by the administrator as an overall policy or group/user-specific settings:

    a) Do nothing, let usb keys, etc connect as normal without any interference. May be used in conjunction with option c below.

    b) Encrypt everything using the standard Credant Keys. This happens automatically, in the background, and can be based off of any windows compliant 2-factor authentication including CAC and biometrics.

    c) Credant2Go is included with all Credant Shield licenses and provides a user-driven encryption (via right click menu option) that can encrypt documents, etc in a self-extracting, password-protected file.

  7. At what point are the files or media decrypted? At what point are the files or media encrypted?
    Depending on the option selected;

    a) No encryption.

    b) The files are encrypted and decrypted as part of the Windows File Access API. When Windows goes to write or read a file, the Credant software intercepts and provides encryption/decryption as necessary. Credant users can move documents between machines on the same Domain and while the same user is logged in – all other use cases will be encrypted.

    c) Credant2Go is operated by the user, similar to WinZip, and can be decrypted by anyone who knows the password.

  8. I need a complete list of media that can be encrypted/decrypted (i.e. CDs, DVDs, flash drive, zip, external hard drives, jump drives)
Credant2Go operates in conjunction with the User and can be used to encrypt documents for any media. Automatic encryption operates lower in the operating system, but can still be used to encrypt USB storage devices, any mounted drive (including external and partitions) as well as popular CD/DVD burning software.
